For 50 years, Stained Glass Garden has been a vibrant home for the celebration of glass art in all its forms- celebrating the beauty, craftsmanship, and creative spirit that transforms light into color. What began in 1976 as a small Berkeley home studio with Joan and her brother Bruce McLean, quickly grew into a welcoming gallery and education center in the Oceanview district, where artists, students, and collectors come together to explore and celebrate the many possibilities of glass art. From custom stained glass design and fabrication, to a gift gallery highlighting artists from the Bay Area and beyond, this creative space honors both tradition and modern innovation while sharing the love of glass. Whether a student is picking up a glass cutter for the first time to refining years of practice, Stained Glass Garden is a place to learn, experiment, and be inspired. Julie Orchard joined the team in 2004, with a passion for art and a desire for community, she immediately was enamored with the transformative quality of glass and immersed herself in every aspect of the craft, studying techniques and refining her skills studying with professionals from around the country. When she became gallery director in 2008, she turned the focus of the studio to the local community of talented artists and showcasing the creativity of the students with monthly showcases, and expanded to inviting visiting artists from around the world to come and share their techniques. After two decades working to grow the community and bring innovation in the gallery, Julie expanded her creative vision beyond personal studio practice to become store owner in 2025. Julie curates with the same care and intentionality that defines her own work, championing both emerging and established artists while creating an inviting environment where collectors and newcomers alike can engage with the medium. Our studio hosts classes 6 days a week, with Open Studio available whenever classes aren’t in session. The supply wall boasts the best art glass selection in Northern California- with glass from every sheet glass manufacturer, including antique mouth-blown and handmade Tiffany reproduction glass varieties. We stock every tool and supply for the creation of stained glass, mosaic, and fused glass art, with the newest products on the market arriving each week. We also stock over 35 architectural glass varieties for home improvement projects, kitchen cabinets, and custom cut glass for tempering. Our gift gallery now showcases the work of over 100 talented Bay Area artists, with rotating art shows each month. As Stained Glass Garden celebrates our 50th year, we remain dedicated to supporting artists, spreading the joy & love of working with this wondrous material, and illuminating the future of glass art.
